Scout Orientation for the PPC Merit Badge Introduction Workshop

A virtual and in-person event sponsored by Patriots’ Path Council Advancement Committee.

Thanks for your interest in the Merit Badge Introduction Workshop!  The purpose of the workshop is to introduce YOU to individual badges (listed below) and qualified counselors, to give the you an understanding of the requirements, and to to motivate and encourage you to complete the work necessary to earn the badge.  During the Workshop, counselors have the goal of completing a few requirements appropriate for a brief online course.  You will be able to obtain a “partial,” recorded in your Scoutbook account, but for most badges you will not be able to complete the merit badge at this event. All the supporting faculty will be available in the days following the Workshop to provide follow-up support for you to complete your badge(s).

WHAT DO SCOUTS NEED TO DO?

  • Have a parent register you by 11:59PM EST by the dates shown below.
    • November 6th – registration closes on October 24th
    • November 13th – registration closes on October 31st
    • December 11th – registration closes on November 28th

Space is limited and classes may close out!  Scroll down for a list of merit badges.  (If registration changes are needed, contact Brenda Sonzogni, 973-765-9322 ext 253, [email protected].  Changes cannot be made after November 6.)

  • Have your unit leader (Scoutmaster or Advancement Chair) connect your Scoutbook account with the Counselor running your class(es) for the specific merit badge.  (See the MBIWS Technology page if you have questions about Scoutbook.)
    • If you don’t already have a Scoutbook account, ask your Scoutmaster or Advancement Chair to set one up…they will see instructions on the Workshop Technology page.
    • Here’s what you need to do in order to complete those directions:
      • Look through the course catalog (link on upper right of this page) for each of the badges you’re enrolled in, and find the name of the counselor you’ll be working with during the workshop
      • For example, the lead counselor for American Business is Kevin O’Shea:Guide Scouts registered for the Merit Badge Introduction Workshop 2020
      • Send a list of all the badges you’ll be taking, along with the counselors listed in the catalog, to your Scoutmaster or Advancement Chair right away.
  • Review the requirements for each badge (here are official requirements for all merit badges), and complete any prerequisites mentioned in the Workshop catalog (download from registration site).
  • For virtual classes, be prepared with a PC (NO phones) and a quiet, orderly and safe space where you can focus and participate respectfully in a joint learning experience.  Sit at a table or desk, no lying on a couch or bed.
  • For virtual classes, connect to each class on time, wear your class-A uniform, and keep your video connected for the duration of the class.  Be prepared to take notes.
  • Use the Chat feature during the session for questions, for tech issues, or if you have to leave.
  • Use your full name to label your window (no nicknames), and no green screen backgrounds.
  • Encourage your parent to volunteer as a Parent Monitor to help support a seamless, high-quality experience for everyone!
