Parent Monitor Orientation for the PPC Merit Badge Introduction Workshop

A virtual event sponsored by Patriots’ Path Council Advancement Committee.

Thanks for volunteering!
Activities in October:
Zoom information for each class will go out to counselors and scouts.  Contact the counselor(s) for your class if the information has not been forwarded to you.

Below is some background on the role of Parent Monitors.  This information will be updated over time.  Once you are registered as a parent monitor, we will reach out with important news and updates.

WHY PARENT MONITORS?

This year’s virtual format will mean up to 20 Scouts will be connecting on the Zoom platform for one- or two-hour sessions.  Zoom is a robust and powerful platform, but the participants are not all visible at all to the presenter while screen sharing.  To ensure every Scout’s experience is as positive as possible, and to satisfy Youth Protection Guidelines in this virtual activity, we are asking for your help to monitor their experience and support the counselor.  This will free the counselor to make maximum use of the available time.  Note: You will need a separate PC in a separate room from your child to avoid audio feedback and disruption.

Examples of Parent Monitor support:

  • Are all registered Scouts in attendance? We will provide parent phone numbers for outreach, and the class counselor may ask you to record attendance.  (And possibly note individual Scout requirement completion.)
  • Are all Scouts in attendance registered? Only pre-registered Scouts should be connected.
  • Is a Scout having technology problems? You can help via chat or email or parent phone calls to get the Scout connected to those teams.
  • Is a Scout using a phone to connect? Walking around or using inappropriate posture?  We want all Scouts to use a computer or tablet and be seated in a stable and non-distracting environment.
  • Has a Scout turned off video? All Scouts should be on camera at all times.
  • I a Scout being disruptive? Frankly unlikely, but again, you may use chat or email or phone calls or a heads-up to MBIWS staff as appropriate.

If you have questions or other inquiries about the event, contact the volunteer Event Coordinator, Michael Merritt, at [email protected].
